I am excited to be working with your child in 5th grade! Our focus during the 4th nine weeks will rely heavily on all skills taught throughout the year as we prepare for the SOL test. We typically have homework on Monday through Thursday evenings. Some of you have asked how you can help your child at home... Randomly quizzing them on their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts is very beneficial to them. I realize that evenings can be hectic, but this is something that can be called out to your child while driving down the road or even while cooking dinner. Giving your child everyday "real life" word problems to solve is an integral part of their critical thinking skills. Ask your child what they are learning in math class and have them explain how to solve their math problems. www.khanacademy.com is a helpful website that gives a tutorial and practice problems that can be used at home to help you and your child on particular math concepts that they are struggling with in class. Your child has been set up on an Xtramath account as well as an IXL math account. They have their passwords and pin numbers so that they may also practice at home. I greatly appreciate any and all that you do at home to work with your child. By having a great working relationship, we can help foster a love for learning with your child and let them know that we both have a vested interest in their education.
